Q: Why does Professional version takes longer to lock using
I tried Lockngo and I noticed that the Professional version takes longer time to lock, why is that?

A: If you check "Encrypt entire disk", lockngo encrypt all the used clusters on the removable drive and replaces all the unused space by zero data. As explained (here), this is performed because unused space may contain previously deleted information and leaving this information intact may create a serious security risk. This means that during locking process Lockngo is rewriting the your entire removable drive. When you unlock your disk however, lockngo decrypts only the previously used clusters and therefore takes significantly shorter time to complete.

Q: Using Lockngo for multiple drives
When I order lockngo and receive the full version, can I use it for all my removable media storage devices?

A: No. The full version will operate only on the removable media from which you ordered the full version.

    Q: Lockngo was accidentally deleted
What happens if I deleted lockngo.exe file from my removable drive by mistake?

A: We highly recommend that you save a copy of the full version file on your hard drive for safekeeping. If you did not save a copy of your full version, you will be able to re-download your full version from the lockngo website.

Q: Forgotten password and Lockngo backdoors
I have forgotten my password. Can you tell me if there is a backdoor to my information?

A: For your own protection, there are absolutely no back doors to lockngo. We highly recommend that you backup your data before locking it. Backing up data is important for your protection not only for incidents of forgotten password, but also in case the removable drive gets lost or stolen. If your data has been locked and you do not know your password you can reformat your drive and copy your registered version of lockngo to return your media to normal operation state. Please note, that by formatting your media you are permanently deleting its content.

Q: How can I tell if my drive is locked?
I plugged in my removable drive and I see only lockngo (or "lockngo.exe") in it. How can I tell if this media is locked or if it is simply empty?

A: Just run lockngo. The lockngo user interface will indicate if the media is locked or unlocked. See an example here

Q: Safely unplug a removable drive
How can I tell that it is safe to unplug my media after locking? Can I plug my media immediately after the lockngo window closes or do I need to wait?

A: Even if lockngo finished locking the media and the Explorer window is opened, the operating system still may require some additional time to transfer information to and from the media. You should wait until the led on your removable disk turns off and only then you can be sure that it is safe to unplug the media.

    Q: Formatting a locked drive
What will happen if I format a locked disk?

A: The files in the locked media will be permanently deleted.
    Previous Top Next

    Q: Recommended password
What password structure do you recommend?

A: We recommend using password that are made of a combination of at least 6 characters , including numeric, small and capital letters and special symbols like "!@#" etc.

Q: Is Lockngo safe to use?
Is it safe to use lockngo?

A: We have taken great efforts to prevent possible damage to media and data. Lockngo is designed so that it checks the media and if - for any reason - the media cannot be locked , Lockngo will restore it to its original state. In this case, you should follow additional instruction in pop-up windows. Since it is impossible to test every media that is in the market today, we recommend backing up the data on the media. Lockngo is delivered 'AS IS' and using it is at your own risk. We do not warrant that lockngo will operate without failure.

    Q: Removable drives
I run Lockngo demo from my removable disk but it says "this software may be started from removable disk only" and doesn't work, why?

A: Lockngo works only with removable disks which are identified by windows as 'removable'. lockngo will not run on hard drives (even if they are actually removable) if windows treats them as non removable.

    Q: Multi-lingual version
When I start Lockngo all the messages are in English. Is there a multi-lingual version of Lockngo?

A: Yes. Currently Lockngo supports: English, Russian, Swedish and Hebrew (and is soon to support more languages). Lockngo automatically change the user interface language based on your 'Regional Settings' inside your computer Control Panel. Click here to learn more. Q: Excluding Owner.* and Autorun.* files (Lockngo Professional only)
What is the option to exclude Owner.* and Autorun.* files from the lock and hide process?

A: As of version 2.20, Lockngo Professional has a new useful feature that enables the exclusion of a specific files from the disk lock and hide process.

This new feature enables you to save a special file in the root of your removable drive with your personal information so that if the drive is found by anyone, it can be returned to you. The new version simply excludes this special file from being locked and hidden during disk lock. Disk autorun files (autorun.*) are also excluded from the lock process in the new version.

Here is how to use this feature:
    1. Create a file with your details (for example, you can write down your name, address, phone or any other information you wish to include in this file). This file can be of any type (textual, graphical, etc.). The size limitation for this file is 150 KB.

    2. Name this file 'owner.*' (depending on its type. For example: owner.txt, owner.doc, owner.gif ... You can use capital letters, small letters or any combination of the two).
    3. Lock your disk and watch how the file you just created does not get locked.

Q: Security level (Lockngo Professional only)
How secure is my data once I lock it using Lockngo? Can someone retrieve my data? Are there any backdoors?

A: If you use Lockngo Professional and set an option “Encrypt entire disk” than your data cannot been retrieved. Lockngo use military strength 256-bit AES encryption algorithm to protect the data. If you use a reasonable password (at least 6 characters long with a combination of numbers, small and large letters) Lockngo is practically unbreakable. If you do not use the “Encrypt entire disk” option or have use the version of lockngo than your data is safe from any incident reading and non-hacker low level raw reading utilities. However, using sophisticated data retrieval tools may cover some of your hidden data.

Q: Problematic USB device connected (I/O device error)
While a problematic USB device is connected an error "Cannot copy.... The request could not be preformed because of an I/O device error" appears. Is there a fix?

A: With the problematic USB device connected, just right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop and select ‘Manage’. In the Computer Management tool click the Device Manager icon and then click the ‘+’ sign next to Disk Drives. Double-click the USB drive icon and click the ‘Policies’ tab. Check the radio button for ‘Optimise for Performance’ and click ‘OK’. This enables write caching for the drive, which should prevent the error message appearing.

    Q: Administrative rights
Do I need adminstrative rights to use Lockngo or Lockngo Professional

A: If you use Lockngo or Lockngo Professional on Windows2000 or Windows XP you need to have adiminstrative rights to use it.
The requirement for administrative right is imposed by the Operating System default policies settings and limits Lockngo from performing the security actions on the removable drive (this is not a Lockngo specific problem - the same requirement applies to similar products available in the market).
If you are a system administrator and wish to change the default system policies, without affecting any other security settings built into the operating system, please review a tutorial written by our staff here.

Q: Size limit for Data and Full Disk encryption (Lockngo Professional only)
Lockngo Professional displays a limit of 512MB for data and full disk encryption? I have a larger disk than 512MB. What should I do?

A: Data and full disk encryption are time consuming processes. The default value of 512MB presents a practical combination of size and speed, and meet the needs of most users.
There are two possible solutions for large disks:
    1. Divide the disk into several partitions. You can have a copy of lockngo on each partition. Make sure that the size of the partition(s) on which lockngo is present do not exceed 512MB .
    2. Increase the default size limit. As of version 3.1 it is possible to change the default size limit for data and full disk encryption through the command line tool. Please refer to the Lockngo Professional User Manual for details. As explained - please be aware that increasing the default size will lead to longer locking times.
Lockngo (non Professional) and the Quick Lock function of Lockngo Professional do not have a size limit.

Q: Encrypt entire disk (Lockngo Professional only)
Is there a situation where it is recommended to leave the option “encrypt entire disk” unchecked?

A: Basically, the answer is a simple NO!
Encrypting entire disk is a time consuming task for your computer and can take up to a few minutes to complete. Therefore, the only case where you might consider unchecking this option is if you are in a hurry and do not care about compromising the security level. Please consult the following table to see the approximate time that it would take to encrypt entire in different systems:

    Disk size

Approximate locking* time for USB1 devices**

Approximate locking* time for USB2 devices**

    16 Mb

    50 sec

    10 sec

    32 Mb

    1 min 30 sec

    20 sec

    64 Mb

    3 min

    40 sec

    128 Mb

    6 min

    1 min 20 sec

    256 Mb

    12 min

    2 min 40 sec

    * Please note that unlock time depends on used size and not on total disk size which means that unlocking time almost always will be much faster than locking time.

** If your disk has USB1 or if your USB controller has USB1, your speed will be always of USB1. To get maximum speed, both disk and controller must be USB2 compatible.

    Q: Supported File Systems
What file systems are supported by Lockngo and Lockngo Professional?

A: Lockngo and Lockngo Professional support disks formatted as FAT or FAT32.
    Previous Top Next

Q: Supported File Systems - Why not NTFS
    Why is NTFS not supported?

A: Lockngo does not support NTFS because it is a system that creates a large cache in RAM. Quite often a user unplugs a portable disk without releasing it. This may result in corrupted data on the portable disk. Though this is not caused by Lockngo, users may assume it is.
    Previous Top Next

Q: Supported File Systems - is FAT safe enough?
is FAT/FAT32 less secure than NTFS

A: NTFS is not more secure than FAT/FAT32 if you do not use encryption for disk folders. However if you do, you need to have the same security encryption certificates on all computers where you use your portable drive. Moreover, you cannot use this on Windows XP Home version. All other security futures of NTFS are non relevant for portable drives.
    Previous Top Next

Q: Supported FIle Systems - Change from NTFS to FAT/FAT32
I have a portable drive formatted as NTFS, how do I change it to FAT/FAT32

A: There are many utilities for formatting your drive as FAT/FAT32. For example SwissKnife from CompuApps: http://www.compuapps.com/download/Swissknife/swissknife.htm
